this is disgusting and insensitive. this should be taken down. date rape is not a joke.
I agree with the first comment by anon: this is totally inappropriate and not funny at all.
sorry… this is hilarious. and totally typical of new rez.
I’ve decided to move the content of the quote below the fold with a warning that it’s more tasteless than usual.
It’s obviously not the most offensive thing someone could ever say on the topic, but its definitely in a gray area that I prefer not to implicitly condone.
If you’re interested (I don’t know why anyone would be), please see our policy on these matters; I wrote it in 2006, and today is the first time I’ve had to refer to it.

First of all, this isn’t funny at all because it’s just a poor modification of the old saying, “It’s not wrong if you don’t get caught.” Sure it’s true, but this is not really a clever take on it.
Secondly, in the link in my name, it’s actually been a huge controversy at University of Sydney and it’s a culture I hope McGill is above.
“More tasteless than usual?” That’s really all you have to say?
And if you prefer not to “implicitly condone” something then I suggest you remove it from a website that you have complete control over. Leaving it up looks like implicitly condoning it to me. Looking at your policy, you claim to reserve the right not to post something that is offensive and unfunny. Guess what – this is both offensive and incredibly unfunny. Making jokes about raping women isn’t edgy or hilarious.
I think everybody overdosed on their serious pills this morning. Reel it back in guys, learn not to take everything seriously. Pretty sure the tagline to this website says “Because smart people say STUPID things” not “because smart people say things that they mean literally and are hilarious because of that”.
Oversensitivity ruins everybody’s fun.
To add one more thing, while the line about rape is definitely tasteless, Dave is right. We’re not laughing at women getting raped. We’re laughing at the guy who thinks it’s appropriate to say such a ludicrous thing.
Remember, not all jokes are for everybody. If you find our website offensive, then maybe we’re not for you.
We’ll be sad about it though, because we really do like you.

Ah yes, the old “you’re just being sensitive” argument. So sorry to ruin your fun, Dave.
What happened to you dude, you used to be cool.
you guys need to relax. overheard is always here trying to give us a laugh and now you are jumping down their throats for posting something that is a) funny, b) not said by them or condoned in any way c) not serious.
I don’t think this is particular humorous, but not because it’s offensive – I mean, it’s horrendously offensive that someone said it. But it’s not offensive that O@M posted it. O@M made a good point – by laughing at this (which I’m not, because it’s not funny anyway) we’d be humiliating the idiot who said it, not condoning his viewpoint.
For all you people complaining about this joke, I suggest you check out Cyanide&Happiness.
I have a feeling you’ll enjoy it a lot.
For your pleasure, I will also add this quote from George Carlin.
Lots of people. Lots of groups in this country want to tell you how to talk.

They’ll say, “you can’t joke about rape. Rape’s not funny.”
I say, “fuck you, I think it’s hilarious. How do you like that?”
The difference is that Cyanide and Happiness is actually funny.
I don’t think that it is funny that some idiot said this and I can’t laugh at the person for saying something “stupid.” This blog has a large audience…just imagine someone who HAS been raped reading this post (and since about 1 in 4 women have been raped, you can be sure that at least one has). I am sure they would find this hilarious. I doubt many people think you find rape funny….but that doesn’t make this post any more acceptable.
take it down. i’m offended, and i’m a bloody engineer!
Jokes like these are all over the place. The truth is that these things are said all the time and people laugh at it. I understand that some people might be very sensitive to this kind of joke, and they are warned not to press the link if they get easily offended! But I do not see how posting this condones rape in any way. Also, Cyanide and Happiness is awesome, but can be extremely offensive. Just to warn the ones who take things very seriously.
Rape jokes aren’t offensive when they are actually funny.
This one isn’t funny, so I’m offended…at its lack of humour.
i lol’d. leave it up.
Pull it down – I can’t believe you are stupid enough not to see the difference between this and your other jokes. This person knew exactly what they were saying and it is inciting violence against women. There’s a difference between crude jokes and hate speech – learn it!
Meh, it’s neither that witty nor that scandalous. I’ve read posts on here that I’ve found quite low-brow and offensive, but I won’t cry about it. The essence isn’t whether or not said individual meant it or not, but in whether or not we can ridicule saying such a stupid thing. You college types don’t come at me with your “hate speech” crapola, it’s like saying “The Producers” glorifies Nazism.
I’m all for risky jokes, but this isn’t just risky, it’s insensitive. As was mentioned earlier, a huge percentage of women have been sexually assaulted and it often happens during the college years. This isn’t just offensive to the many women who have been directly sexually assaulted, but also to everyone who has been faced with it in one form or another. By “laughing at his ludicris comment” and “humiliating him”, I’d argue that we’re not changing the world and standing up in the name of the good, but instead just laughing at shock humour because we’re too dumb to get any value out of anything else. I vote for it to be removed.
are you serious? this isn’t offensive at all. you aren’t being too sensitive, you’re misunderstanding what it is about this quote that is supposed to be funny. it isn’t that women are objects and should be taken advantage of and, high five, that’s awesome, it’s that they are not and the guy who said this hasn’t realized it. just like this (http://www.overheardatmcgill.com/archives/2009/11/08/inconvenient-youth/) girl hasn’t realized that that isn’t how global warming works. humour is often derived from the contrast between what is expected and what occurs. people at mcgill are expected to be sensitive to the world around them, and this guy is not. that’s the point. get over it.
